Other plans in the pipeline include: to develop further our web page so that it can be used as a medium sharing information, particularly, in site classification, data bank for laboratory testing, problem sites, etc. We will update the FFSV Practice Notes to be in line with AS 2870-2011. We will pursue registration of Geotechs with the Building Control Commission. We will be aspiring to have direct involvement in the AS 2870 Code Committee thru the National Society, FFSA. We aim to at least have three workshops next year.

May I take this opportunity to thank all the members of the committee who have lent their precious time to attend committee meetings, organise workshops, help answer queries from members, and most importantly, do most of the hard work for me.

I have enjoyed working with the committee in the last two years. After two years’ stint as Chairman, it is now time to pass the baton to next elected Chairman.

On 6th December 2011, the committee has convened and elected the following office bearers for the year 2012:

Philip Vaudrey – Chairman

Tanya Kouzmin – Vice Chair

Francis Hsiegh – Treasurer

John McFarlane – Secretary

Ramon Leoncio – Committee Member, Web Page Administrator

Russell Brown – Committee Member

David Lawrance – Committee Member

Bernie Weberruss - Committee Member

Anthony Simoni – Committee Member

Andrew Redman - Committee Member

Congratulations to the new office bearers!

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Foundation and Footings Society of Victoria was formed in 1991. The association grew of an initial informal meeting in July 1991 of engineers, engineering geologists and technicians involved in the geotechnical assessment of building sites.

Year End Report from the Chair

Ramon D Leoncio, MIEAust, CPEng, FFSV Chairman, 2009 - 2011

Twenty years ago, in September, 1991,  the FFSV held it first AGM with about 30 geotechnical practitioners and civil / structural engineers in attendance. This year therefore marks a milestone in the history of the Foundation & Footings Society (Vic).

Today, the FFSV has 102 members consisting of 59 corporate members, 36 associates, 7 affiliates, 2 honorary members and 2 student members.

Over the years, FFSV has run very successful workshops, seminars and field excursions. We have developed Site Investigation Methods and Practice Notes for the benefit and compliance of its members. I think it is fair to say that over the  twenty  year period, we have seen a marked improvement in the conduct of site investigation practice and reports in this industry.

One of the important achievements is the recognition of FFSV as a  learned society and  along with other partner organisations, we have been granted a research fund, $115,000 per year for 3 years through the Australian Research Council. The FFSV has pledged $9,000 in cash and $24,000 in kind per year for 3 years towards the research.  The other sponsoring partners are: Building Commission, Office of Housing, ACSEV and HEDRA. The research, titled: “Minimisation of Damage to Residential Structures due to ground movement” has commenced and is being conducted through Swinburne University headed by Prof Emad Gad.

I am happy to report that for this year we ran two very successful, well attended workshops, namely:  Rock Anchor and Soil Nailing, presented by Geotechnical Engineering and, AS 2870-2011 Workshop, chaired by Dr Peter Mitchell of Aurecon. There was an overwhelming  interest in the AS 2870 workshop that some of the late bookings had to be turned down. We will be running the same workshop next year and it will be conducted in one of the regional centres. Those who missed out can therefore take advantage of this next opportunity.
